North Yorkshire Dales Drive

On Sunday 11 June, members as far as from London, gathered at the Ripon Cathedral Car Park for the third edition of the Yorkshire Tour.  Five cars made it to the (late) start: 2 Mercedes SL, 1 Bentley Continental, 1 Triumph Stag and 1 Bristol 409. And all made it to the end and back home.

The first part was a fast drive of 22 miles from Ripon to the historic market village of Grassington via Nidderdale and Wharfedale. Nowadays, Grassington has found renewed interest with visitors from all over the UK as its Main Street and Square are the setting for the Channel 5 ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ series.

After a delicious and sunny coffee break outside the Devonshire Arms (see picture), the group set off to Hawes famous for its Wensleydale Creamery, via increasingly narrower lanes, and an obligatory stop to stock up on delicious cheeses.

The last part of the tour took us via even narrower lanes from Hawes to the Fat Lamb Country Inn in Cumbria. This is a must for any car enthusiast as the landlord is himself a collector of fine, classic cars. We felt extremely welcome in this homely establishment with many automobile paraphernalia on the walls, fine ales and a good, albeit late, Sunday roast with – of course – Yorkshire pudding.
